A 10-member committee formed by the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF), under the directives of the Bombay high court, began its three-day inspection visit to the Lavasa hill city project on Wednesday.

The committee, headed by ex-bureaucrat Naresh Dayal, will assess the environment impact of the project and submit a report to the MoEF by January 10. The panel comprises six representatives nominated by the MoEF and four by the state government, drawn from the town planning, revenue and water resources departments. It began the inspection by visiting different sections of the project and verifying the state of affairs at these locations on Wednesday.

Dayal told reporters that the committee would undertake an elaborate exercise to know what steps Lavasa Corporation had initiated to mitigate the alleged environment damage at the project site.
